Oscar de la Renta Dead: Legendary Fashion Designer Dies At 82
ABC News has reported on Monday that legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta died at the age of 82. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.
(Giphy via Tumblr)

My greatest memory with my late mother involves Oscar de la Renta. One night, we stayed up late to watch his fashion show on TV despite the nagging our better judgement gave us for skipping sleep when we’d have a busy day. It was probably 2 or 3 in the morning and we’d been watching runway shows all night in the living room of our small Brooklyn apartment. But, the Oscar de la Renta show gave us pause. The silhouettes, textures, and colors were balanced in ways that breathed timelessness and class. It was around the time cancer began destroying our lives. We’d both been through so much hell that we’d often forget that we could leisurely enjoy the finer things, let alone that we deserved it. But that night, we forgot for a while. As the colors danced on the screen, a lady was reborn and the other awakened. We were hardly just two women drooling at pretty dresses. We became the women who could wear those dresses, women who would “work” those dresses. After that, I began designing and making some of the things I wear. My mother passed on peacefully.R.I.P. Mr. Oscar. Thank-you for giving me a dream. Thank-you for giving my mother a few minutes of joy. And thank-you for giving us a moment free from worry. You will not be forgotten.
